Wizkid: The Evolution

As we anticipate the release of his E.P, arguably the best African Musician or at least the most successful, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid could be said to have evolved from the young potential and raw talent that sang ‘Holla at Ur Boy’ in 2010 to a man who has since featured with the best artistes both nationally and internationally.

The 26 year old still has a long time to remain at the top of the game in the music industry, though many claim he has reached his pick, people also said that last year so instead of focusing on what people say, let’s look at the progress of this young singer from ‘Surulere’.

In 2016, Wizkid achieved international recognition following his collaboration with Drake on the global hit, “One Dance”, which reached number one in 15 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

He was ranked 5th on Forbes and Channel O’s 2013 list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artists. He followed that with acquiring more fan base the following year as in February 2014, Wizkid became the first ever Nigerian musician to have over 1 million followers on Twitter.

Throughout his singing career, Wizkid has received a total of 43 awards from 157 nominations. He is the recipient of a BET Award, three Billboard Music Awards, two iHeartRadio Music Awards, one MTV Europe Music Awards, four MTV Africa Music Awards, two SoundCity MVP Awards, one African Pride Award, two MOBO Award, six The Headies Awards, two Channel O Music Video Awards, six Nigeria Entertainment Awards, two Ghana Music Awards, two Dynamix All Youth Awards, two City People Entertainment Awards, and a Future Award. In addition, he has been nominated five times at the MTV Europe Music Awards, three times at the American Music Awards, once at the Grammy Awards, as well as four times at the World Music Awards.
