A lot of Nigerian movie lovers were excited when they saw Dakore Akande in the Nollywood Blockbuster, Fifty, playing the role of Tola.  She was finally back to Nollywood, and a huge comeback at that. As expected, she played the role beautifully, shedding light on the issue of incestuous rape in Nigeria and the world as a whole, so it was not a surprise, but good news that she was the Isoken of Isoken the movie. According to Akande, “I think it is important for these types of movies because of what women are going through generally. While her role as Tola in Fifty was a complete contrast to Isoken, she felt a deep connection to the role of the latter because “I got married in my 30s, so I totally understand. When my husband and I were dating, we were constantly under pressure. There was a lot of speculation on our relationship; people were counting for us, so I know what it’s like to be under pressure. The Society should stop trying to box women into a corner, stop telling them what to do, not forcing us into doing what they want”.

Simple and full of excitement, Dakore rose to fame about 25 years ago, having starred in the sitcom, ‘Inheritance’. This is rather an irony, as to her, “acting was never the plan, I was totally surprised. That is one thing about life, if you don’t put yourself inside a box, you never know, you can just surprise yourself”, she states. She further explains that she started out doing music whilst studying Mass Communication at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where she eventually did not graduate from because “life doesn’t always go as planned. It’s not always what you set out to do that is your calling, education is super – important but sometimes life gets in the way and that’s okay too, as long as you’re applying yourself to whatever you decide to eventually do with a spirit of excellence”, she says.

It is however a sweet – sorrow, that the mother of two is relocating to Los Angeles, in the United States of America, along with her family. As such, she is making a transition from Nollywood to Hollywood, as she is set to spread her acting wings into Hollywood. She explains that “Nigerians are doing really well out there. I think it is a really great time for Black actors of a different origin, because people want to see themselves. It’s not just for me, its also for my kids, to give them a bit more stability. They are American, I would like them to experience the opportunities out there”.  She’s also pretty confident about making it out there, and we do not have the slightest doubt whatsoever.
